Electrical Engineering – A Distinguished Field of Engineering

electrical engineering

The electrical engineering department's role is to be mainly responsible for evaluating and assessing the needs of a development.  The electrical engineer must make sure codes are complied with and ensure the future safety of a structure. An electrician in Los Angeles would be very familiar with such codes.  In addition, an electrical engineer must coordinate and design electrical systems for the project at hand. Another important function would be to select electrical wiring that is the proper fit for each project.  This type of engineering can include projects with brand new buildings, additions to existing buildings, and the remodeling of older structures. This field of work can also encompass individuals that work at power plants, or even in labs where testing and researching of electrical issues occur.

It is very important that an electrical engineer meet the needs of a particular structure using proper capacities for safety reasons.  This becomes a very important factor in building a new structure from homes to coliseums and all that falls between.  The field of electrical engineering designs and coordinates the wiring of a new building. This would include deciding what materials and how much of the materials will be needed.  In a project of this nature the engineer would have to work closely with the architect for the building progress to move along on a timely basis.

When an existing structure is being added on to an electrical engineer must calculate the demand of the electricity necessary for the addition that is about to occur. They must comply with building codes and ensure that the building with the addition added will be able to handle the total load of power necessary.  When the project is one of remodeling an older structure, electrical engineering has the task of evaluating the existing equipment to make sure it is up to code and will be able to handle all of the current that the remodeled building will require.  In many cases an older electrical system may be considered unsafe due to corrosion and/or insufficient and the electrical engineer will require that it be replaced with what they have selected to be safer and more efficient. However, often times the corrosion can be easily dissolved with a good rust remover.

Electrical engineering is a specific field of broader category of engineering.  It requires a four year degree from a credited institution. Someone that excels in this field has usually excelled in various math and science courses.  In addition, many positions may require these engineers to spend some time with clients, other engineers and architects so being able to relate with others is certainly a plus.
