A Career to Ensure Proper Design and Safety Requirements

Building engineering is a career where someone works in several phases of a structure’s existence making it a safer and more useful space.  These types of engineers work with the thought of a new building being built, remodeling an older structure, and additions to existing buildings.  The engineer for each type of these projects has the same goal yet will have different tasks to reach their goal.  The underlying important factor with each engineering job is to ensure the safety of the building, complying with codes for the city in which the building exists, and making recommendations for designing a sound structure.  It’s also important for the building engineer to try to make their decisions as cost effective as possible while being following all safety guidelines.

Building a brand new structure requires a large amount of work from a building engineer.  They must make sure the foundation is correct for the structure that is being placed there, and they have a large part in the selecting what types of materials are best for the building’s future purpose.  Building Engineering also involves getting proper measurements so the correct amount of materials is purchased.  They will have to work closely with the architect of the building and may be required to complete models of the new establishment. In addition, they also have to communicate with the electrical engineer(s) for the same project.

When a building already exists but is having an addition put on or is being renovated to add years to the life of the building the building engineer has a few different tasks.  They will need to evaluate the existing structure to ensure it is safe and is up to the building codes of the area and then make recommendations on if changes need to be made before going forward.  In the case of an addition the function of building engineering is to ensure the existing structure is secure in relation with how and where the addition will be added.

A successful building engineer that is also content with their career choice is normally a person that enjoys solving problems.  Another skill this type of engineer should possess is the enjoyment of working with things “hands on” at least some of the time.  A person interested in engineering that is also creative and forward thinking will most likely be a great fit for this line of work. Building engineering does require a four year degree from a college that possesses this program in their curriculum.
